Protaster flexuosus was named by Miller and Dyer (1878). Its type specimen is Syntypes MCZ 108078, 108079 and is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Protasterina flexuosa by James (1896); it was recombined as Alepidaster flexuosus by Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Drepanaster flexuosus by Spencer (1934).
