Falco lineatus was named by Gmelin (1788). It is extant.

It was recombined as Buteo lineatus by Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1962), Broughton (2004), Kilmer and Steadman (2016) and Clements et al. (2017).
