Taxonomy
Tetrao umbellus was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant. It is the type species of Bonasa.

It was recombined as Bonasa umbellus by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1962), Parmalee (1992), Clements et al. (2017).
