Rheodytes was named by Legler and Cann (1980). It is extant. Its type is Rheodytes devisi.

It was assigned to Chelidae by Frank and Ramus (1996), Gaffney et al. (2006); to Chelodininae by van Dijk et al. (2014); and to Chelidae by Maniel and de la Fuente (2016).
