Coelogasteroceras was named by Hyatt (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Liroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Barskov and Shilovsky (2014), Korn (2025).
