Cheiropterasteridae was named by Spencer (1934). Its type is Cheiropteraster.

It was assigned to Ophiuroidea by Spencer (1934); to Lysophiuricae by Lehmann (1957), Owen (1965); and to Lysophiurina by Jell (1997), Jell and Theron (1999).
