Knightoceras was named by Miller and Owen (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 524,1066].

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Koninckioceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Sabattini et al. (2006).
