Taxonomy
Aetobatis arcuatus was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was synonymized subjectively with Aetobatis irregularis by Leriche (1942); it was recombined as Aetobatus arcuatus by Cope (1868), Hay (1902), Leriche (1938), Jonet (1968), Iturralde-Vinent et al. (1998), Kent (2018).
