Rotodactylopus archaeus was named by Ellenberger (1970). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Aliwal North bridge tracksite, Rouxville, which is in a Triassic terrestrial sandstone in South Africa. It is the type species of Rotodactylopus.

Ellenberger 1972Le pied (droit) montre 4 doigts de longueur presquè égale et quasi­parallêles, munis de griffes dont au moins trois (IIl-IV-V ?) ont opéré une faible rotation circulaire à la marche (vers l'extérieur). - La main (droite) est peu marquée. Il semble qu'il y ait une tendance à la bipédie.
