Trisauropodiscus pompompoi was named by Ellenberger (1970). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Thejane-Maphutseng tracksite (zone A/5), which is in a Hettangian/Sinemurian terrestrial horizon in the Elliot Formation of Lesotho.
