Shinkaia was named by Baba and Williams (1998). It is extant. Its type is Shinkaia crosnieri.

It was assigned to Shinkaiinae by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2000); to Galatheidae by Baba and Williams (1998), Schweitzer et al. (2010); and to Munidopsidae by Schweitzer et al. (2023).
