Sphyradoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 299,524].

It was assigned to Nephriticeratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Barrandeocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
