Alosidae was named by Svetovidov (1952). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Alosinae by Grande (1982) and Nelson et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Clupeidae by Grande (1982) and Nelson et al. (2016); and to Clupeoidei by Bienkowska-Wasiluk et al. (2024).
