Coragyps was named by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1853). It is extant. Its type is Vultur urubu.
It was assigned to Vulturidae by Hay (1930); to Cathartinae by Amadon (1977); and to Cathartidae by Lambrecht (1933), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017), Eshelman et al. (2025).
