Phalacrocorax femoralis was named by Miller (1929) [type specimen is unnumbered]. It is a compression preserving soft parts. Its type locality is Poyer's Quarry, which is in a Miocene/Pliocene offshore shale in the Modelo Formation of California.
It was recombined as Miocorax femoralis by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1952).
