Taxonomy
Proterogyrinus scheelei was named by Romer (1970). Its type specimen is CMNH 10950, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Proterogyrinus.

Synonyms
  • Mauchchunkia bassa was named by Hotton (1970). Its type specimen is USNM 22573, a partial skeleton, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Greer, which is in an Arnsbergian terrestrial shale in the Bluefield Formation of West Virginia.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Proterogyrinus scheelei by Holmes (1984).
