Irinoceras was named by Ruzhencev (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,304,954]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Prionoceras (Irinoceras) by Kullmann (1963).

It was assigned to Prionoceras by Kullmann (1963); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prionoceratidae by Furnish et al. (2009); and to Imitoceratinae by Korn (2006) and Korn and Sudar (2016).
