Otogornis was named by Hou (1994). Its type is Otogornis genghisi.
It was assigned to Cathayornithidae by Hou (1997); to Ambiortidae by Kurochkin (2000); to Ornithurae by Hope (2002); to Euenantiornithes by Chiappe (2002); and to Enantiornithes by O'Connor and Zelenkov (2013), O'Connor et al. (2014), Wang et al. (2014).
