Taxonomy
Anningia was named by Broom (1927). It is not extant. Its type is Anningia megalops. It is the type genus of Anningiidae.
It was considered an invalid subgroup of Amniota by Reisz and Dilkes (1992).
It was assigned to Varanopsidae by Romer and Price (1940); to Anningiidae by Kuhn (1966); to Pelycosauria by Reisz (1986); and to Afrothyra by Spindler et al. (2018).
