Platygoniatites was named by Ruzhencev (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,304]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Delepinoceratinae by Furnish et al. (2009); and to Delepinoceratidae by Korn (2006), Korn and Sudar (2016).
