Noteosuchus was named by Broom (1925). Its type is Eosuchus colletti. It is the type genus of Noteosuchidae.
It was assigned to Noteosuchidae by Kuhn (1966); to Rhynchosauria by Carroll (1976); to Archosauromorpha by Benton (1985); and to Rhynchosauria by Ezcurra (2016) and Ezcurra et al. (2016).
