Taxonomy

Clypeoceras was named by Smith (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1066]. Its type is Aspidites superbus.

It was assigned to Paranoritidae by Spath (1934); to Proptychitinae by Tozer (1981); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Clypeoceratidae by Shigeta and Zakharov (2009); and to Proptychitidae by Brühwiler and Bucher (2012).

Aspidites was named by Waagen (1895).

Aspiditella was named by Strand (1929).

It was synonymized subjectively with Clypeoceras by Spath (1934).
