Dunedinites was named by Tozer (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Dunedinites pinguis.

It was assigned to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proptychitidae by Tozer (1994), Ware and Bucher (2018).
