Goniocidarina was named by Mortensen (1928). It is extant. Its type is Goniocidaris.

It was reranked as the subfamily Goniocidarinae by Fell (1966), Smith (2009), Kroh and Smith (2010).

It was assigned to Stereocidarinae by Mortensen (1928); and to Cidaridae by Fell (1966), Smith (2009), Kroh and Smith (2010).
