Indiana was named by Mathew (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Cm mMid Sepkoski's reference number: 11,111,580].

It was assigned to Archaeocopida by Bengtson (1992); to Ostracoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Indianidae by Benson et al. (1961), Skovsted (2006).

Indianites was named by Ulrich and Bassler (1931).

It was synonymized subjectively with Indiana by Bengtson (1992).
