Otoceras was named by Griesbach (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Otoceras woodwardi.

It was reranked as Hungarites (Otoceras) by Diener (1897).

It was assigned to Hungarites by Diener (1897); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Otoceratidae by Spath (1934), Tozer (1994), Korn (2006) and Zhang et al. (2017).
