Paragymnites was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 302].

It was assigned to Pinacoceratidae by Spath (1951); to Gymnitidae by Tozer (1981); to Placitinae by Tozer (1994); and to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002).
