Tianyulong was named by Zheng et al. (2009). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Sereno (2012).
It was assigned to Heterodontosauridae by Zheng et al. (2009), Han et al. (2012), Sereno (2012), Hübner (2016), Zhou and Wang (2017), Madzia et al. (2018); and to Pachycephalosauria by Dieudonné et al. (2020).
