Geniohyus fajumensis was named by Andrews (1904). Its type specimen is BMNH 8435, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Bunohyrax fajumensis by Matsumoto (1926), Rasmussen and Simons (1988), Rasmussen and Gutiérrez (2010).
