Catarrhactes antipodes was named by Hombron and Jacquinot (1841). It is extant.

It was recombined as Megadyptes antipodes by Fordyce (1991), Worthy (1998), Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
