Amoeboceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-u J Kimm-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Ammonites alternans.
It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cardioceratinae by Arkell et al. (1957), Mesezhnikov (1984), Schlegelmilch (1994) and Schairer and Schlampp (2003).
