Spirigera protea was named by Abich (1878).
It was recombined as Athyris (Composita) protea by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Araxathyris protea by Grunt (1965), Fantini Sestini and Glaus (1966), Grunt (1986), Zeng et al. (1995), Angiolini and Carabelli (2010), Yousefirad et al. (2013), Garbelli and Angiolini (2014), Ghaderi et al. (2015).
