Limusaurus was named by Xu et al. (2009). It was considered monophyletic by Xu et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Abelisauroidea by Ezcurra et al. (2010); to Ceratosauria by Xu et al. (2009), Ruiz et al. (2011), Tortosa et al. (2014) and Gianechini et al. (2015); and to Elaphrosaurinae by Rauhut and Carrano (2016) and Delcourt (2018).
