Gunnarites was named by Kilian and Reboul (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 971].

It was reranked as Kossmaticeras (Gunnarites) by Kilian and Reboul (1909).

It was assigned to Kossmaticeras by Kilian and Reboul (1909); to Kossmaticeratidae by Henderson (1970), Lahsen and Charrier (1972); to Kossmaticeratinae by Kennedy and Klinger (1985), Macellari (1986); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
