Osteolepididae was named by Cope (1887). Its type is Osteolepis.
It was assigned to Taxistia by Cope (1887); to Osteolepiformes by Chang and Zhu (1993), Lebedev (1995); to Osteolepidida by Otto (1999), Young and Schultze (2005); to Osteolepidiformes by Nelson et al. (2016); and to Osteolepidoidei by Borgen and Nakrem (2016), van der Laan (2019).
