Lenticeras was named by Gerhardt (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni-l K Sant-l].

It was assigned to Eulophoceratidae by Hyatt (1903); to Lenticeratidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956); to Lenticeratinae by Wright (1952), Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
