Taxonomy
Protodus was named by Woodward (1892). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Protodontidae.
It was assigned to Pleuracanthidae by Hay (1902); to Cladodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Acanthodii by Denison (1979); and to Protodontidae by Turner and Miller (2008), Ginter et al. (2010), van der Laan (2019).
