Davidaster was named by Hoggett and Rowe (1988). It is extant. Its type is Actinometra rubiginosa.

It was assigned to Comatulida by Lewis et al. (1988); to Capillasterinae by Hess and Messing (2011); and to Comatellinae by Summers et al. (2014).
