Sciponoceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Turo-u].

It was assigned to Baculitinae by Förster (1975), Cooper (1978); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Baculitidae by Matsumoto (1959), Wright (1979), Young (1979), Kennedy et al. (1987), Henderson (1990), Summesberger (1992), Kennedy (1994), Kennedy (2005), Szives (2007), Kennedy (2013), Kennedy and Gale (2015), Kennedy and Morris (2018).
