Galeus appendiculatus was named by Agassiz (1835) [also named in figures by Agassiz as Corax appendiculatus].

It was recombined as Corax appendiculatus by Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Acanthias appendiculatus by Leriche (1929) and Dalinkevičius (1935); it was recombined as Centrosqualus appendiculatus by Herman (1977); it was recombined as Centrophoroides appendiculatus by Guinot et al. (2013).
