Cearadactylus was named by Leonardi and Borgomanero (1985). Its type is Cearadactylus atrox.
It was assigned to Pterodactyloidea by Leonardi and Borgomanero (1985); to Cearadactylidae by Dalla Vecchia (1993); to Gnathosaurinae by Unwin (2002), Unwin (2003); to Ornithocheiroidea by Andres et al. (2014); and to Pteranodontoidea by Kellner and Tomida (2000), Vila Nova et al. (2014).
