Murex (Murex) nicholsi was named by Gardner (1947). Its type specimen is USNM 3671851, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS Loc. 3856 - Mossyhead [Shoal River Fm], which is in a Serravallian marine marl/sandstone in the Shoal River Formation of Florida.
