Typhis sowerbii was named by Broderip (1833). It is extant.

It was corrected as Typhis sowerbyi by Adams (1853); it was recombined as Typhis (Typhinellus) sowerbyi by Smith (1939); it was recombined as Typhis (Typhinellus) sowerbyii by Keen (1944); it was recombined as Typhis (Typhinellus) sowerbii by Gertman (1969).
