Beloptera was named by de Blainville (1827) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 307]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Belopterinae by Kretzoi (1942); to Belopteridae by Jeletzky (1966); to Sepiida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Belopteriidae by Dernov (2024).
