Cythara basilissa was named by Gardner (1938). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS Loc. 3742 - Mossyhead [Shoal River Fm], which is in a Serravallian marine marl/sandstone in the Shoal River Formation of Florida.
It was recombined as Lepicythara basilissa by Woodring (1970).
