Trigonucula was named by Ichikawa (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Tr u Sepkoski's reference number: 159]. Its type is Trigonucula sakawana.

It was assigned to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nuculidae by Vokes (1980), Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
