Taxonomy
Oreortyx was named by Baird (1858). It is extant. Its type is Ortyx picta. It was considered monophyletic by Eo et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Perdicidae by Schultz and Howard (1935); to Odontophorinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956); and to Odontophoridae by Eo et al. (2009), Clements et al. (2017).
