Taxonomy
Anoplotherium was named by Cuvier (1804).

It was synonymized subjectively with Proterotherium by de Blanchini and Blanchini (1971).

It was assigned to Rhinocerotina by Gray (1825); to Ruminantia by Owen (1848); to Anoplotheriinae by Erfurt and Metais (2007); and to Anoplotheriidae by Carroll (1988) and Hooker (2007).
