Volsellina was named by Newell (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 745].

It was assigned to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mytilidae by Hoare (1961), Sterren and Cisterna (2010).
