Hymeniastrum was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: J u R]. It is extant. Its type is Hymeniastrum pythagorae. It was considered unknown by Ehrenberg (1847).

It was assigned to Spongodiscidae by Ehrenberg (1847); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
